Grammy Award-nominated rapper Tyga has signed a big multi-million dollar deal with Columbia Records, officially joining the label. He’s expected to release new content in the very near future.
“They definitely understand the global brand,” he explained in a recent interview in Variety. “I have a lot of fans worldwide — in places I’ve never been like South America, and in places I have been like Asia and Europe. They can help bring that to a larger scale. Doing it independently, you don’t really have those teams to help worldwide.”
“Sony, if you look at the history from what they’ve done from Pharrell to Beyoncé to Adele — then you look at Lil Nas X, one of their new artists that’s blown up this year — they’ve done a lot for artists globally, for their brand.”
After releasing his first major label debut, Careless World: Rise of the Last King, in 2011, Tyga’s career has gone thru the roof. The album contained the triple-platinum “Faded” featuring Lil Wayne and the quadruple-platinum single “Rack City”.
Last year, he unleashed his most successful single to date, “Taste” featuring Migos rapper Offset. Peaking at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, the song went six-times platinum but it also generated over 1 billion cumulative streams online.
